Something strange happened on the way to the bathroom this morning, the British media were all aflutter with Hilary Cass’s full report which apparently excoriated trans youth healthcare in the UK. That is until you read the specifics and discover it is not so much a steel gauntlet of truth wrapped in a velvet cloth as much as it is a hatchet hidden behind a furrowed brow. Other more eloquent writers have deconstructed the science behind the report, namely that in dismissing 98% of all available evidence Cass has essentially created a house of mirrors for trans paediatric healthcare whereby the only evidence she accepts is the politically acceptable kind. Namely, unless you are a rare breed of trans kid there is not a snowball’s chance in the Sahara that you will get anywhere near affective medical treatment. Of course, none of this matters to those with political power to decide the fate of trans kids, as even in the face of Gillick competence those without medical knowledge of trans kids have unilaterally decided those trans kids are not competent to understand their own needs and minds. Yet, as folk like myself prove, being a teenage transitioner is not a path to regret, it is a path to liberation and hope. Hilary Cass fundamentally misunderstands trans healthcare, and her report is very much a furrowed brow burying the hatchet deep in our backs.
